South Central Pennsylvania Climbers is partnering with Blue Mountain Medic, LLC to offer a two-day, Wilderness First Aid course on Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30, 2025. The course is Wilderness Medical Associates International (WMAI) certified. The class runs from 8:00 a.m. to 5/5:30 p.m. each day, and will take place at the Yellow Breeches Educational Center in Carlisle, PA. 

The course is meant to provide meaningful learning opportunities within a space inclusive of women, genderqueer, trans-femme, and trans-masc climbers. In addition to those identities, all members of the LGBTQ+ community are welcome to attend. 

This course is taught by Tara Cross, a qualified and experienced WMA instructor who provides high quality instruction through a combination of classroom learning and hands-on application.

Wilderness First Aid is the ideal course for outdoor enthusiasts on overnight or short term wilderness adventures. Students will be able to recognize medical emergencies, and will become familiar with basic life saving skills, patient assessment, and basic field care for common injuries. The certification is valid for three years. 

Course Fees and Logistics

The course is $185 per learner due at the time of registration. The class size will be between 14-18 learners. Registration closes on Saturday, March 8, 2025. 

Course topics: 

  • Patient assessment and emergency care including CPR and AED use, basic life support skills, the patient assessment system, patient reporting, and calling for help.

  • Treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, including splinting.

  • Environmental medicine including illness and injuries related to temperature, lightning, submersion, and environmental toxins.

  • Non-technical lifting, moving, and extrication of patients with an emphasis on spinal motion restriction when applicable.

  • Management of wounds such as lacerations, burns, and blisters. 

  • Practical Skills including bleeding control, wound cleaning, bandaging, splinting, spine stable patient packaging, hypothermia management, medical kit preparation.

  • Recognition of signs and symptoms associated with serious medical emergencies.

  • WMA International wilderness protocols including treatment of anaphylaxis and wound management.

Learners will receive a unique Moodle access link for the course in which they register. There are course related release forms that will need to be completed prior to the first day of the course. The Moodle online platform includes the textbook and other digital WFA resources. There is an optional study guide and study resources on Moodle under student resources. Participants will be able to review all pre-course information on Moodle well ahead of the class. 100% attendance and a passing grade of 80% are required to receive a certificate. 

What To Bring

Participants should dress to spend time both indoors and outdoors. Students should not wear their most expensive and favorite clothing items to class. We will take a lunch break. Check the weather prior to the class to be prepared accordingly. Participants are responsible for bringing the following items: 

Participants (Required)

  • Personal lunch/snacks

  • Water 

  • Appropriate clothes for weather 

  • Backpack (no certain backpack size required; anywhere between 12-25 L should be fine)

  • Notebook/Pen/Pencil

  • In addition to what you wear to class, bring along a set of an old t-shirt and old pants (possibility of being cut up and used for demonstration/possibility of getting dirty during field demonstrations) 

Participants (Encouraged to bring your own if you already have these) 

  • Sleeping bag

  • Sleeping pad or yoga mat

  • Blanket
